During the last 3 years, I have been writing a book on “breeding-back” and everything related to it. Basically compiling all the knowledge and literature I have been gathering on this blog over the last 10 years. The bulk of the work covers the aurochs, but also of course the wild horse and the quagga is covered as well.
In this book you will find everything I covered on this blog in a structured and comprehensive manner, and also of course new information. It will feature:
- An overview over the impact of large herbivores on the landscape
- A precise description of what we know about the aurochs
- How domestication changed the wild bovine
- A history and evaluation of and ideas for “breeding-back” the aurochs in as much detail as possible
- A precise description of what we know about the wild horses of Europe
- A compilation of historical evidence of the horses historically called “tarpan”
- A critical evaluation of the stories revolving the Konik pony, Exmoor pony and Sorraia
- Ideas for a “breeding-back” project focusing on horses
- The quagga and “breeding-back”
- My dedomestication hypothesis
- Thoughts on the potential de-extinction of recently vanished megafauna
- qualitative photos and artworks, some of which I have not published so far

ReplyDeleteI like pretty much everything I read on The Breeding-back Blog, except for one small detail.
In some comment you wrote a long time ago that something I interpreted as positive to inbreeding-like "line breeding".
I think scientific breeding methodology is better, that overall you achieve better results if you make a protocol of all the breeding criteria for the breed and test the bulls, so you can statistically see which statistically produce the offspring with the best fulfillment of all the breeding criteria.
The same scientific breeding methodology that VikingGenetics carries out on production animals can be carried out even if the breeding criteria are wild traits.

ReplyDeleteI am not sure where to post this. But, I have a question:— what is the Bos taurus ibericus and the Equus caballus celticus? The first has been applied to the Iberian fighting cattle (Lidia), but usually breeds are not given subspecific status. The second is called the Celtic horse, apparently now only represented by the garrano, Sorraia, Exmoor pony and Iceland horse, but what exactly is it? Should the domestic horse be Equus caballus or Equus ferus caballus (in which case, it would be Equus ferus celticus)?
